First-Time Camper's Guide
Everything you need to know to prepare your child (and yourself) for their first camp experience.
Preparing Your Child
Sending your child to camp for the first time is a big milestone. Start preparing weeks in advance by talking positively about the experience and addressing any concerns they might have.
Practice Independence
- Have sleepovers with trusted friends or family
- Let them pack their own bag for day trips
- Encourage them to order for themselves at restaurants
- Practice basic self-care routines
What to Pack
Most camps provide a detailed packing list. Essential items typically include:
- Comfortable clothing appropriate for activities
- Sturdy shoes and sandals
- Rain gear
- Bedding (for overnight camps)
- Toiletries
- Sun protection
- A comfort item from home
Managing Expectations
Help your child understand that camp is a unique experience. It's okay to feel nervous, miss home, or struggle at first. What matters is being open to new experiences and making an effort to participate.
Staying Connected
Most camps have policies about phone calls and technology. Write letters before camp starts that can be mailed throughout the session. This gives your child something to look forward to without disrupting their experience.
